A combination of sheet-metal groynes and wooden revetments was emplaced along 4 km to encourage the development of a sandy beach in front of the rapidly eroding cliffs of weak glacial clays and sands. The scheme was initially successful but a combination of storm damage and high maintenance costs has caused the revetments to fall into disrepair. It also came to be appreciated that on actively eroding coastlines such as the hold-the-line policy was financially impracticable and might not necessarily be desirable. The sediments washed from these cliffs contribute to the beach deposits and salt marshes that form natural sea defences on the Suffolk coast.
